Macy Gray: Id

Macy Gray’s new album Id is an addictive listen, and as she says it’s about being oneself, unedited. And boy is she.

Glo-product research for Burning Man 2001

By Shabbir | July 14, 2001 |

I’ve just done a quick survey of Internet glow stores. I think I will save you some trouble. I think Glowstickfactory has the broadest selection of products, and is slightly cheaper on some things than these others that I checked. ExtremeGlow MegaGlow Glo-Net LiquidLight4Glow However, don’t miss the glow in the dark plastic pellets that…

Southern Sushi

This North Carolina sushi report in from Ryan Thornburg:

Every year some lucky journalist cons his editors in to letting him take a jaunt around the South searching for the Worlds Best Barbecue. Chapel Hill, NC, is often home to at least one place on the list. Now, for some unexplained reason, it is the home to a sushi boom. Popping up in the midst of coffee houses, pizza joints, and smoothievilles in the downtown area of this college town are two new sushi counters. However, from the taste of things, most Southerns will continue to use raw fish primarily as bait.

Amazing seafood in the Tampa Florida area!

A colleague and friend recently took me to the Salt Rock Grill, in Indian Shores Florida (outside Tampa and St. Petersberg). I was thoroughly amazed at the quality and freshness of the fish, the wide variations on preparation, and the sheer size of the facility and it’s famous grill.

This sushi report in from 3Mouths correspondant Sanford M. Saunders

Recently being out in El Paso, Texas and tired of eating dead cow — low and behold — we came upon Shogun (1201 Airway Blvd, El Paso, Texas) — a full service cocktail lounge and sushi bar. Shogun has a reasonable variety of sushi which is fresh and tasty. The sushi chef is friendly and quite willing to let you create your own rolls — this was very popular w/ certain members of our group.

American Submarine Espionage

Blind Man’s Bluff is the exciting and previously untold history of undersea warfare in the American Navy. This book is an excellent read, and it’s become one of my two touchstones for well-told history. As America’s undersea program comes under the spotlight during the recent accident off the coast of Hawaii, it’s an appropriate time to look at how we got where we are, and consider in context the fact that accidents don’t happen more often than this.

Blood, blood banks, and blood-borne epidemics

I picked up Blood: An Epic History of Medicine and Commerce, before my honeymoon. I had intended to read it in Cuba, but there really wasn’t space in our luggage with all the other books I brought. So it sat on deck for months until I got around to it.

Money Laundering for fun and profit

I’ve recently finished The Merger: The Conglomeration of International Organized Crime, which profiles the history of organized crime in the last 30 years as it became global, and the failure of the best law enforcement agencies in the world to stop them.

More honeymoon reading: The Conquest of New Spain

By Shabbir | January 28, 2001 | Comments Off on More honeymoon reading: The Conquest of New Spain

Until recently, I didn’t even know that the manuscript The Conquest of New Spain, even existed. I picked up the book in a bookstore in Cancun, Mexico, on my way back from Cuba, thinking that it would make a good addition to my recent love of carefully focused history books.

Must see films: O Brother and Snatch

By Shabbir | January 28, 2001 | Comments Off on Must see films: O Brother and Snatch

This weekend I saw two new films, Snatch and the O Brother, Where Art Thou?. Although not everyone I was with was unanimous in their love of Snatch (I loved it), O Brother was wildly popular among the audience and us, and if it hadn’t been such a conservative audience, would have received a standing ovation.
