Teach geometry in Minecraft

Following on the success of my teaching basic logic circuits in Minecraft, my son wanted another lesson, so I went with geometry.

Some shapes are going to look awkward in Minecraft until you pull back.

Some shapes are going to look awkward in Minecraft until you pull back., and so I thought I’d try geometry, teaching shapes, perimeter and area.   Here’s the lesson plan I put together.

For each of the following two dimensional shapes, build them on a flat surface in minecraft out of any kind of block.  Compute the perimeter and the area for each of these shapes.

  • Square (no side larger than 5 units)
  • Triangle (no side larger than 10 units)
  • Rectange (no side larger than 10 units)
  • Pentagon (no side larger than 10 units)
  • Diamond (no side larger than 10 units)
  • Hexagon (no side larger than 5 units)
  • Trapezium (no side larger than 10 units)
  • Octagon (no side larger than 10 units)
  • Heptagon (no side larger than 5 units)
  • Cross (no side larger than 5 units)
  • Parallelogram (no side larger than 10 units)
